五四百年祭(Ode to 100-Year Anniversary of May 4th)

这两天在海外华人网站上读到有关五四的一首诗:
悠悠百年五月风,
物渐豪奢念却空。
红朝玉玺传武大,
不识人间大潮东。

让我想起在当年在旧金山North Beach(唐人街)经常出没的孙中山在武昌起义后动身返国时所写的一段话:
“世界潮流,浩浩荡荡,顺我者昌,逆我者亡。”
海外华人对国内的事情,有复杂的情节。他们由于夹杂在几种文化而产生的特殊观点,有时过于偏激,有时过于理想化,难免被人不齿。即使中肯的,在“如日中天”的国力下,也可能遭到冷眼。
无论如何,本居士还是想步问题哥和中山先生的后尘,此时此刻,以言语发泄一下自己感想。英文写的,姑且称之为“五四百年祭”吧:
Ode to the 100-Year Anniversary of May 4th
The weeping for justice
A hundred years since,
On the streets of city,
Shattered the silence
Of a humiliated country.
With cries for Mr Science,
And also Mr Democracy,
A veil was lifted on
Face of modernity.
In blood and tear,
Ten decades hence,
A proud nation is removed
Of her fear
And despair!
Behind modern tower
And blossom flower,
Stands perplexity of
An emerging power;
And a people engulfed
In pursuit of the material
Desperate, though, still
In search of her soul.
